Beautiful Inky Blue Hematite Crystals on Matrix
Skardu District, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan
Hematite is a common mineral that is quite commonly found and because of its delicate and thin crystals forms, the majority of crystals are broken and didn’t last long but perfect and more aesthetically formed crystals are rare. The majority they do exists in botryoidal round shape with red and brown rocks such as sandstone caused by a small amount of hematite.
This particular specimen is a variety of hematite called Specularite which is a thin platy intergrown-like variety of hematite so-called micaceous mean (aggregate of compact, flat, and peel-able sheets ) hematite with small intergrown hexagonal plates that produce a glistening effect when rotated. It features well-crystallized lustrous hematite crystals with super metallic mirror luster and fine edges. Crystals sit nicely on white albite containing matrix with calcite. The features crystals are almost perfect all around and so the specimen more a 360-degree piece. Indeed a beautiful and aesthetic piece for collection!

The name hematite comes from a Greek word meaning “blood” which is derived from the fact that, when cut, the saw coolant becomes colored red. Hematite is one of the most common minerals. The color of most red and brown rocks, such as sandstone, is caused by small amounts of Hematite.
It is also responsible for the red color of many minerals. Hematite can be in reddish-brown, dark silvery-grey scaled masses, ocherous masses, silvery-grey crystals, and dark-grey masses. Formerly used as mourning jewelry, but today mainly for rings and necklaces. It takes a very high polish.
